Top 5 Mistakes in Liquid Application (and How to Avoid Them)

Liquid de-icing isn’t complicated once you understand the basics. The problem is, too many operators jump in without training and end up frustrated. They spray too little, too much, or at the wrong time—and then blame the product instead of the process.

The truth is, liquids work when you apply them right. Here are the five most common mistakes we see, and how you can avoid them.

Mistake 1: Spraying Too Little (or Too Much)

Liquids are effective within a specific range. Standard application rates are:

  • 75–80 gal/acre for light snowpack or after-plow glaze
  • 100–120 gal/acre for heavy snow or bad ice

Spray too little and you won’t break the bond—ice will stick, and you’ll be back re-treating. Spray too much and you waste product, track it around the site, and kill your cost savings.

Mistake 2: Waiting Until It’s Too Late

Liquids shine when you use them before the storm. Pre-treating creates a barrier that stops snow and ice from bonding to the pavement.

If you wait until ice has already bonded, you’ve lost most of the advantage and you’ll spend more to catch up.

Mistake 3: Poor Calibration & Equipment Setup

Uneven coverage is usually an equipment problem, not a product problem.

If your nozzles, flow meters, or pumps aren’t calibrated, you’ll end up with hot spots and bare spots. A quick calibration routine at the start of the season saves endless frustration (and angry callbacks).

Mistake 4: Ignoring Site Conditions

Not all lots are the same. Low spots, shaded areas, and high-traffic entrances need extra attention. Spraying every site like it’s the same leads to missed spots and unsafe conditions.

Operators who take a moment to understand the layout apply smarter and get better results.

Mistake 5: No Training for Operators

The biggest mistake of all: sending crews out without training.

Operators need to understand rates, timing, and site conditions. Without that, you’re wasting money and damaging your reputation. With even a little training, crews become confident, efficient, and safer on the job.

The Bottom Line

Liquids deliver results—but only if you apply them right. The good news is, avoiding these mistakes isn’t complicated. With the right training and a bit of practice, your crews will see firsthand why more and more contractors are switching.
